THORN BETA 5

Thorn beta 5s have a aluminium canopy, and a acrylic bowl. Thorn beta 5s usually run 26/ 35w SOX, but SON versions were available, but they are rare. Thorn made these in top-entry and side-entry and they made  a few different designs for the canopy.

lido car park, Guildford

this thorn beta 5 is on the lido car park, Guildford. This one has the 2000s style thinner canopy and it is side-entry. It runs on a 26/ 35w SOX lamp.

Here, you can see that the lamp is bent in the lamp holder.

Staines

This poor thorn beta 5 is on a footpath in Staines. It has lost its bowl, and the lamp holder and lamp is hanging. This poor thorn beta 5 has definitely seen beta days.😢

the gear tray has also rusted. The lamp looks like a very old SOX lamp, probably original to the lantern, and it looks like a osram, GE or Thorn lamp. I did have a look around for the bowl, as I need it for one of my thorn beta 5s, but I couldn’t find it.

Ascot, Berkshire

These thorn beta 5s are on London road in ascot, berkshire. There are 4 beta 5s, all on Concrete utilities concrete columns.
this is the first column on London Road. It is on a swan-neck CU column and has a blue Royce-Thompson oasis photocell.

This is the second column. It has a different type of CU bracket, and the bracket is a bit damaged, there is also a small crack at the top of the column.

This is the third column. It has a swan-neck bracket like the first one.

The door on this column is loose, so I lifted it up and i saw the cutout and the cable that goes to the lantern.

This is the fourth, and last column on this road. It is on a much newer CU concrete columns and the lantern is probably original to the column. Unfortunately, this lantern has a corncob LED lamp in it, and the lamp has failed, so the lantern keeps flashing. This is the only lantern that still kind of works.
